ICICI Bank launches new Co Branded card with BA

ICICI Bank, India’s largest private sector bank and British Airways have teamed up to launch a co-branded ICICI Bank credit card. The card certainly has a bit of a long winded title - ICICI Bank British Airways American Express Credit Card, but it looks like it could be a winner for anyone looking for travel rewards.

According to the press release, the card will provide one of the fastest ways of earning complimentary flights using a credit card in India. The card has a rewards program redeemable in British Airways flights. The card also provides complimentary membership to the British Airways Executive Club and earns BA miles if used for everyday spending. The main features of the cards are :

  • Earn accelerated BA Miles up to 9 miles for every Rs100 spent on the card.
  • 25,000 BA Miles if cardholders’ book and fly on a British Airways return ticket from India to UK in the first 3 months of Card membership.
  • 5% discount on selected airline tickets purchased directly online using your credit card.
  • Earn up to 8000 BA Miles on the first use of credit card.
  • Membership to British Airways Executive Club and attractive BA Miles earned on everyday spending.

ICICI bank recently announced that it was eliminating annual fees on all its cards with the exception of cobranded airline cards. As a result it is more than likely this card will have an annual fee, though if you are frequent flier then this card will be extremely suitable. Since that announcement a consumer tribunal has imposed limits on the rates of interest credit card lenders can charge their customers. Lenders appealed that decision to the Supreme Court, which deferred making a judgment until it received guidance from the banking regulator. In anticipation that the Supreme Court would rule in favour of the tribunal ,major card issuing banks have begun either upgrading existing card holders to new cards which levy annual fees or have begun charging annual fees to customers who sign up for new cards.
